Document requirements when travelling abroad
When travelling overseas, whether this is for business or personal reasons it is important that you take all the correct travelling information/documents with you. These documents are often required at the airport to enable you to travel and return to the UK and also some will assist you whilst overseas or if you experience difficulties.
Documents for Travel
When travelling overseas it is important that you keep your passport with you at all times. This will be required at passport control at both ends of the journey and is the main form of identification which enables you to travel. When travelling you should remember to keep your passport on your person as this will will be required at multiple stages throughout the journey and is of no use in your luggage. Before travelling you should always ensure that your passport will be in date for the return journey as you will not be able to travel if this has expired.
When travelling around Europe we would recommend that you travel with an EHIC (European Health Insurance Card). This card is free to obtain from the EHIC website and will ensure that you have access to State provided healthcare in countries of the EEA (European Economic Area). With this card you are able to obtain Healthcare at either a reduced rate or in some circumstances, free of charge.
Please make sure that before travelling you also purchase some form of travel insurance. It is important to understand that the EHIC is not an alternative to travel insurance as this is only able to cover your treatment but would not cover costs of flights back to the UK if you did need to return early. You are able to obtain different levels of cover in regards to travel insurance and you should purchase cover that is most relevant to you. Extras can be purchased at additional costs with travel insurance although most travel insurance companies basic insurance will cover: –
- Personal Liability
- Medical Cover
- Baggage & Belongings
- Delay
- Cancellation
- Emergency Assistance
Before travelling overseas it is important to ensure that you take all of the correct flight and booking information with you. Flight information is important as this will detail your flight number and the time the flight leaves.
Taking all of the correct booking information is also important, this booking information mainly applies to your flights and hotel although it will also be required for other services such a car rental. It is important to ensure you travel with all correct booking information to avoid problems when obtaining the services you purchased once you have arrived overseas.
